How to Set up Family Safety for your child ?

Dear friends, as you know now, the use of the Internet is growing. But for the kids, it's still something new, where we have to be careful about what to let these browse.

Then the family security option can be said to be a family security, so here's the goal of protecting children from a long and unnecessary stay in the computer, browsing websites that are not of interest to different children.

With the help of family security we can limit many things to a user on our computer like:

  • Time to stay on the computer
  • Blocking different web pages
  • Blocking the programs we have installed on our computer and such things.

To accomplish the above, we must first create a new user on our computer, so this user is used by children.

To create a new user (in Windows 8) we do so:

1.Open Control Panel and select "User Accounts and Family Safety"

2. Select the "User Accounts"

3. Select the option "Manage another account"

4. Select the option “Add a new user in PC settings”

5. Select the “Add a user”

6. Select the “Sign in without a Microsoft account”

7. Click on the "Local account" button

8. Set Username, also if you want to have a password, in this case, we only set Username, and then click Next.

9. Let's tick the "Is this a child's account? Turn on Family Safety to get reports of their PC use. "That is to say (If the user is going to use the kids, then enable Family Safety for getting reports of their use), and finally click the Finish button.

10. Here we see that a user is created

Once we have created a user (which user will be used by kids) then we continue to limit the options for this user.

Go back to the Control Panel and click on User Accounts and Family Safety

Then click on the Family Safety option

We choose a username that we have just created

Then, this window presents us with various options with which we can manipulate different rules for this user.

First, activate both of the following options:

- On, enforce current settings

- Yes, collect information about PC usage

Then click on Web filtering and we have two options:

- can use all websites (so the user can use all websites)

- can only use the website I allow (user can use those pages which I as administrator allow)

In this case, we have chosen the second option, for the reason that we stop some websites in this user.

Click on Set web filtering level
I am explaining the 5 points for what they serve:
- Allow list only
Children can browse the websites that we have allowed on the list, while other websites are blocked.

- Designed for children
Children can browse the websites we have listed on the site, as well as child websites, while adults

websites are blocked.

- General interest
Children can browse the websites we have listed on the site as well as websites for children and websites from the general category, while adult websites are blocked.

- Online communication
Children can browse the websites we have allowed on the list, as well as websites for children and websites from the general category, social networks, web chat and the category for webmail, while adult websites are blocked.

- Warn on adult
Children can browse all websites, but always receive a warning when a page contains adult content.
In this case, we have chosen the second point so Designed for children

Then we go back one step and click on Allow or block specific websites

Below we see the web sites that we have allowed on this user and those we have banned.

Then we go back two steps back and click on Time Limits
The Time Limit option is an option by which we can set the time for this user how much it will be active.

Click on Set time allowance

The following window shows two check-buttons
- can use the PC all day (can use the entire computer day)
- can only use the PC for the amount of time I allow (can use the computer for the time I allow)

In this case, we have chosen the second option, and we have set this week on weekdays to be active only 45 minutes a day, while during the weekends it will be active 1 hour (60 minutes).
Addition: After finishing this time that we've assigned and trying again to lock in this user then that will not be possible.

Let's go back one step, and click on the Set Curfew with which in this section we can set the day and the time when this user can be used.

In this window below we can adjust the time when this user can be used and how long it can be used (the time should be roughly the same as the one we set for the Time allowance item)

As seen in the picture below we for this user have set the time when it can be used by children, so during weekends this user can be used starting from hour
3:00 - 4:00 PM, and during the weekdays we have scheduled from 4:00 am to 5:00 pm (so the last PC will be used only 45 minutes although here the time interval of using PC -s is 1 hour, because we have set the time allowance point to use only 45 minutes on weekdays.

Let's go back two steps and click on the Windows Store and game restrictions

In this section, we can determine which games we can play on the Windows Store as well as the games we have installed on our computer.

- can play all games and view all Windows Store apps
(User can play all the games in the Windows store)

- Can only play games and Windows Store apps I allow
(User can play games on the Windows Store which I have allowed as admin)

In this case, we have chosen the second option, and then at Set Games and Windows Store ratings, we can determine which games can be used for this user.

And while linking to Allow or block specific games, we can block or allow the games we have installed on our computer.

Let's go back one step and click App restrictions where in this section we can determine which programs can use this user (ie the programs we have installed on our computer.

So here we have selected some programs that can be used by this user as well.

This was all about this lesson about security or protection of children from unnecessary use, long stay at the computer, and browsing of unnecessary websites that are harmful to them.
